Generational nuclei are like those found in atoms: structural dimensions held together by their positive charge which releases a binding energy. Generational nuclei cannot be defi ned so precisely, but their activity can be observed and tested just like their atomic counterparts. The generational nuclei are identifi ed through ethno-antropological observation and produce an enormous amount of attractive energy towards both their own generation and others, with a power that shapes future values and behaviours.

We have selected some topics which we consider to be fundamental, if not mandatory, for these students:
- the knowledge of Calculus, for functions of one and two variables;
- the use of Calculus in optimization;
- the notion of integral for functions of one variable;
- the language and the elementary techniques of Linear Algebra;
- the basics of Financial Calculus.
Several preliminary examples from applied sciences (mainly from Economics) introduce the theoretical aspects. We have tried to avoid an excessive formalism, in order to quickly reach the fundamental concepts.

Essentials of Applied Portfolio Management

This book offers an essential introduction to modern portfolio theory. The book provides a number of simple, practical examples to allow the reader to apply the theoretical concepts presented in each chapter. A portion of such practical cases are worked out in Excel and made available through the book’s website.
The book takes inspiration from Markowitz’s classical mean-variance, it then proceeds to develop modelling tools of increasing sophistication that eventually take into account the role played by generic risk-averse preferences. The book also explores a few advanced topics: the use of multi-factor asset pricing models and the role of background risks and human capital.

Authors
Massimo Guidolin is Full Professor of Finance at Bocconi University where he teaches a number of courses in Econometrics and Asset Pricing. He also teaches Portfolio Management at SDA Bocconi School of Management. He serves on the editorial board of a number of international journals and he has extensively published his research in empirical finance.
Manuela Pedio is an adjunct researcher associated with Bocconi’s Finance specialties and associate analyst with the Private Investor Product desk at Unicredit, in Milan.

Probability

Today probability turns out to be one of the most pervasive mathematical topics. It actually affects a number of quite different fields, proving particularly relevant to courses ranging from Statistics to Economics, from Finance to Management Science. Recently it has even found significant applications in some sectors of Law.
This book contains a short presentation of the most basic aspects of probability theory. As a result, it should come in handy and help students grasp the main concepts of the discipline as well as acquire a basic probabilistic vocabulary, thus capturing at least the flavour of possible relevant applications. The book includes a sketch of von Neumann – Morgenstern utility theory, which is useful per se as well as being an enlightening bridge between probability and decision theories. The book also provides a substantial set of exercises with solutions.

Authors
Erio Castagnoli is Contract Professor Senior of Mathematics at Bocconi University in Milan, his research interests focus on Optimization, Decision Theory, and Mathematical Finance.
Margherita Cigola is Associate Professor of Mathematics at Bocconi University in Milan, her research topics mainly concern Optimization and Mathematical Modelling for Decisions and Management.
Lorenzo Peccati is Contract Professor Senior of Mathematics at Bocconi University in Milan, he is a specialist in Financial and Business Mathematics.

Macroeconomics Lectures

The latest editions of introductory texts are becoming easier and easier. At the same time, macroeconomic models used by central banks in their simulations (the so-called Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Models, DSGE) are increasingly microfounded – and thus complex. In a nutshell, BUP Macroeconomic Lessons fill a gap. Surely students will find them slightly more difficult than the most popular textbooks, but their investment will pay off when they attend a Macroeconomics course. It will help them understand that microeconomics and macroeconomics are two different, albeit connected, worlds, because they will appreciate that the two disciplines share the same way of thinking. Even if this were the only Macroeconomics course in their lives, they would nonetheless have acquired the ability to "think for themselves" about the problems that the political economy faces everyday. The book contains the basic classical macroeconomic models: the Solow growth model and the classical AS-AD model in the three markets of labor, goods/funds, and money. The final chapter is a bridge to microfounded theory through the analysis of a two-period economy and the underlying intertemporal choices by consumers and firms. The authors place constant emphasis on the fact that they are studying economic equilibria and on how market forces come into play when the economy is out of equilibrium. The overall result is a less fragmented, more unified presentation of classical macroeconomics. Egea website's Mybook contains a wealth of exercises at various level of difficulty and more data about the world economy (today, in the last 20 years, in the last 200 years).

Fashion Collections

This book aims to analyze the logics and instruments by which fashion companies create collections, taking into account the variety of companies’ characteristics and business models. The collection development process is a critical activity for fashion, that must continuously renew its products, and is subject to increasingly strict time, cost and quality goals. A central theme in the book is the complexity of managing the collection development process, due to the number of operations that must be carried out and the variety of actors involved. In addition, there are outside actors, such as the raw material suppliers or manufacturers, that can participate in the development processes. There must also be interaction between the creative and managerial competences present in the company. For all of these reasons, fashion collection development requires extraordinary coordination and integration abilities.
This book is the product of the work and efforts of various authors, from both the academic and professional worlds. It also features numerous examples from the fashion industry.

The New Social Game

The aim of this book is to understand whether the new social game creates wealth for its participants. For this reason, the authors look at the theoretical implications of the increasing overlap between dialogue and sale, market and society, or, more simply, money and gift. By focusing on the convergence taking place between the roles of customer and citizen, the book develops a new theory of convergence and tests it through a dedicated model of a so-called "co-value chain". This model is applied to a large number of recent case histories, discussing the implications for management. In many cases, companies are mere facilitators of the service, while consumers are channel leaders and drivers of the service production and consumption. Such collaborative consumption is investigated in detail in the empirical section at the end of the book, through an analysis of Blablacar and Airbnb.

Innovation in Organizations

The ability to generate new knowledge is one of the main drivers through which organizations can achieve a position of competitive advantage. While being able to innovate means different things in different contexts, the processes and actions through which companies mobilize knowledge to innovate are remarkably comparable across different types of organizations. This book, starting from an in-depth study of a corporate R&D lab, proposes a general framework to discuss the development of innovative capabilities in organizations. The proposed framework builds on the importance of informal knowledge-sharing ties among individuals in the organization to illustrate the process through which relevant knowledge is accessed, acquired, and leveraged to generate innovations.

Management of Cultural Firms

What are the specific characteristics of organizations that operate in cultural sectors? What are the challenges facing their managers? Cultural organizations play a crucial role in the contemporary society, thus, they need to respond to expectations of multiple private and public actors and, moreover, they have specific characteristics. For these reasons, it is not possible to apply managerial practices tested in other situations, but it is necessary to carefully recognize their social and cultural peculiarities. Therefore, this book aims at providing an overall view of themanagerial issues and conditions to be met for a business to be well-managed, and subsequently reflecting on how it is possible to apply them to the world of art and culture.

This book is written for undergraduate students in Economics and in Political Science who want to learn about the political economics of redistributive policies. It provides a positive analysis of the political process behind the design and implementation of redistributive policies, by using the minimum level of mathematical formalization required, in an attempt to be accessible to second- and third-year undergraduate students. The book does not span the entire domain of political economics but concentrates on redistributive policies. This includes monetary transfers, such as pensions and unemployment benefits, as well as regulations, in the labor and product market, which allow to redistribute economic rents. Although the book is mostly self-contained, readers are expected to have a basic knowledge of microeconomics.

Corporate Debt Management

Corporate Debt Management is an essential, practical and easy-to-read book . It summarizes in simple and clear terms the main theoretical contributions on the subject of debt decision choices and effectively illustrates their main managerial implications. Moreover, it adds to the management knowledge by providing practical examples on how to implement an optimal capital structure, using real financial data, and how to construct and use a debt management plan. The book also provides a clear management guide of the banking and capital markets instruments to design the most coherent financial structure for a company.
A final section concludes the book with a description and a discussion of the main financial strategies that corporate managers could adopt in order to guide their decisions related to the corporate debt level. It will help lecturers to deal with practical issues related to the capital structure of corporates. In particular, it will help to address issues like: how can we practically implement the search for the optimal capital structure promoted by the theory? How can we analyze the sustainability of a certain corporate debt level? How can we integrate a debt management plan with the main ratios used by banks and financial intermediaries? How can we link the corporate financial needs with the financial solutions available on credit and capital markets?

Visual Merchandising

Why a book on Visual Merchandising? Because Visual Merchandising gives substance to something that has to change its very essence: the store. The rise of new communication artifacts in today’s multichannel context means that the store needs to transform its role and its methods for interacting with both customers and producers. The store has to offer value through proactive interaction with its customers. If value in the store visit lies in living an experience, regardless of making a purchase, Visual Merchandising lays the groundwork for that experience. This book is for people who deal with communication – for the store and in the store – distributors, agencies, and university students in Master’s programs, along with all those interested in Marketing, Communication, or Retailing.

What's Fashion? It's Method!

The book examines the indispensable factors for the launch and management of a new creative process: the authors provide truly effective tools between research & edutainment. The results of recent studies have in fact acknowledged the existence in people, institutions, and businesses of every size and sector, of a noticeable tendency towards changes in processes (of products and services). This publication aims to group together around a single concept, change for growth, the interests and goals of all those in Italy and in the world who have recognized that the adoption of new strategies is an incontrovertible need. This volume thus seeks to meet a challenge, that of rethinking and redesigning behavior, models, and attitudes; in a nutshell, the market approach of the sector and the Fashion System.

Applied Econometrics

The goal of this book is to facilitate both teaching of applied econometrics, particularly in undergraduate and Master courses, and learning by students and, more generally, by those concerned with a formal measurement of economic events. The task requires combining statistics, economics and computer science in the right proportions. Statistics is needed for a correct formulation of the problem and interpretation of the results, so the statistical content of this book is rigorous but limited to what is strictly necessary. All theoretical concepts are then illustrated empirically, with examples that use either simulated data or actual data on economic variables. The examples in this text are based on EViews.

Author
Massimiliano Marcellino is Full Professor of Econometrics at Bocconi University, Milan, fellow of CEPR and IGIER, and Scientific Chairman of the Euro Area Business Cycle Network (ECB-Eurosystem-CEPR). Previously, he held the Pierre Werner Chair on the Monetary Union at the European University Institute.

Dynamical Systems and Optimal Control

The volume provides and elementary introduction of the mathematical modelling in those areas on Dynamical Systems and Control Theory that arise frequently in Economics.
The book is divided in two parts. In the first part the fundamental aspects of mathematical modelling are developed, dealing with both continuous time systems (differential equations) and discrete time systems (difference equations). Particular attention is devoted to equilibria, their classification in the linear case, and their stability. An effort has been made to convey intuition and emphasize concrete aspects, without omitting the necessary theoretical tools.
In the second part the basic concepts and techniques of Dynamic Optimization are introduced, covering the first elements of Calculus of Variations, the variational formulation of the most common problems in deterministic Optimal Control, with a brief introduction to Dynamic Programming, both in continuous and discrete versions.
This book is designed as an advanced undergraduate or a first-year graduate course for students from various disciplines and in particular from Economics and Social Sciences.

Authors
Sandro Salsa is Full Professor of Mathematical Analysis at the Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy.
Annamaria Squellati was Lecturer of Mathematics at Bocconi University, Milan and Contract Professor at Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy.

Games, Powers and Democracies

Picture a government that measures civic value on a numbered scale, with civic performances tallied on leader boards, like a football match. Imagine if civic value was viewed as a game played by everyday citizens, sometimes in competition, other times working in harmony towards a common goal. And imagine that winners were celebrated (and losers blamed) collectively. All over the world, governments, public bodies and international organisations are using technology in ways to transform the exercise of public power into a game. Gamified public power is much closer to reality than it may first appear - and as Eugeny Morozov ironically points out, it looks nothing like ‘your average Tetris’. The book aims at discussing the promises and the challenges behind the use of gamification in public governance, both at the national and supranational levels. In the first part, the book reviews the landscape of gamification, takes a brief look at its history, provides definitions and examples of its application within the private and public sectors. At the private level, examples include business companies, civic organisations, media outlets and universities. In the public sector, the examples include both successful and unsuccessful efforts by public regulators at the national and supranational levels to ‘gamify’ their policies. The second part shifts the focus from the descriptive to the problematic analysis of gamification in governance. Readers are also introduced to a number of issues and challenges linked with the use of game-design elements into policy-making. Risks include the nurturing of an elite concept of participatory democracy, the rise of implementation and monitoring costs, the rise of a distorted perception of public powers from the public, and linguistic and privacy issues. Building on previous parts, the third section addresses the efforts that civic engineers, scholars and policy-makers propose to make of gamification a tool for improving democracy.
